Change picture

Turn a screenshot from the Album into a game's cover or background, on the Switch.

On this page

On a game’s details page, Change picture opens your Album screenshots, one at a time, newest first.

Use it

  1. Take a screenshot of the game (or anything else) with the Capture button.
  2. In the loader, open the game’s details and choose Change picture.
  3. Left and right go to the newer or older screenshot. The page shows “3 of 11” and when it was taken.
  4. A 2:3 frame, full height, marks the part that becomes the cover; the rest is shaded. Move it with L and R (80 px a step), or drag it with a finger.
  5. Press A and choose Use as cover, Use as background or Use for both.

The library shows the new cover at once. B goes back to the details.

What it writes

FileSizeFrom
cover.bmp300×450, 405 KBThe framed part
backdrop.bmp640×360, 691 KBThe whole screenshot

The loader has no JPEG encoder, so it writes 24-bit BMP. The pictures are written first, then manifest.json is updated ("cover": "cover.bmp", "cover_custom": true). If the manifest cannot be written, the game keeps the pictures it had. The importer’s --replace and FTP uploads keep these pictures.

note

A game without a manifest.json gets a message instead: a manifest without the importer’s fields would stop the game from starting.

How it works

  • Screenshots come through the system’s Album service (capsa), which returns them decoded at 1280×720. The JPEG files under Nintendo/Album/ use 4:4:0 sampling, which the loader’s JPEG decoder cannot read, and the Album also keeps screenshots in system memory.
  • Videos are left out.
  • The 3.7 MB screenshot buffer exists only while the page is open, and the Album service is closed when you leave it.
