Getting started
Start with full memory
Ren'Py games need the full application memory. Hold R while opening a game; applet mode is refused.

Homebrew started from the Album runs as a library applet, with a fraction of the console’s memory. Ren’Py games need the full application memory.
How to start with full memory
- Close the loader if it is open.
- On the HOME menu, hold R and open any installed game. Keep holding R until the Homebrew Menu appears. This is the title override.
- Start rpynx from the Homebrew Menu.
The library header shows an amber Applet mode chip when you are not in full-memory mode, and Diagnostics shows the applet type and the memory bar. In run 1 the console reported 3189 MiB in application mode.
Why applet mode is refused
caution
A Ren’Py game in applet mode crashed the whole console, twice (hardware runs 8 and 26). The crash happened inside the Album applet, which is fatal for the system: the Switch had to restart.
So the loader does not start games in applet mode. Pressing Launch opens a notice that says how much memory is available and how to start with full memory. There is one button, OK, and no “Launch anyway”. The runtime refuses as well, with the system error dialog, if it is started some other way.
In run 27, pressing A on a game four times in applet mode gave not started, applet mode (394 MiB) each time, and no game started.
What still works in applet mode
- The library, the controller settings and the controller test.
- Diagnostics → Run Python self-test. The self-test is small enough to run there.
note
Chain-loading the runtime goes through the Homebrew loader, so start rpynx from the Homebrew Menu in either mode, not some other way.
